FIELD

A VikingBall field Penalty Box Viking Box Alley Center Line Crease Goal Goal Line

1: Viking Box

This is the area where the Viking is allowed to roam throughout the game without incurring a penalty. The viking box extends from the goal line up to a marker agreed upon by both teams; on smaller courts, face-off dots can be used as the two front corners of the viking box, while on larger courts, the blue line might serve as the front edge of the box. A general guideline is that the front edge of the viking box should roughly be halfway between the back wall of the court and the center line; the field used for VikingBall can change in scale, but the basic proportions of the court should be present. There should be enough room for the Runners to circumvent the viking box via the alley. A chalk line can be used to clearly mark the boundary of the box.

2: Penalty Box

The penalty box is the area behind the goal line. This is where Runners must go after committing a penalty. Runners also stand in the penalty box at the beginning of penalty shots before the ball is back in play.

3: Alley

This is the area to the on either side of the viking box. Runners can enter any portion of the field, including the viking box, but the alley provides a corridor for the Runners to more safely move behind the opposing goal. It is still possible for the Viking to score hits on Runners as they move around the viking box; the more aggressive the Viking is when attacking Runners, the more likely it is that his goal is vulnerable.

4: Center Line

Although the center line serves no real function in standard gameplay, it provides a useful marker when determining offensive and defensive field positions.

5: Crease

As in hockey, this is the area where the Viking must initially stand when defending against penalty shots.

6: Goal

In standard play this is a netted goal with a 5' x 5' opening. The AVL is currently using recycled fishing nets from Port Angeles, Washington.

7: Goal Line

This is the line that marks the plane of the goal. The ball must cross this line into the goal to be counted as a point. The goal line is also used as the boundary of the penalty box and functions as the marker for defending Runners during penalty shots.
